Exciting news for Percy Jackson fans: The Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series is coming to Disney+

After almost a decade of waiting and hoping, author Rick Riordan released that the popular series “Percy Jackson in the Olympians” will be adapted by Disney on May 14 in a statement on social media:

“Hey Percy Jackson fans, for the past decade, you’ve worked hard to champion a faithful on-screen adaptation of Percy Jackson’s world. Some of you have even suggested it would be a great series for Disney+. We couldn’t agree more! We can’t say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one. Rest assured that Becky [Riordan’s wife] and I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show. There will be much more news in the future, but for now, we have a lot of work to do! Buckle up, demigods. It’s going to be a fantastic, exciting ride!”

“Percy Jackson and the Olympians” is one of the most beloved young adult series of all time. Its combination of Ancient Greek mythology and modern-day life, along with its humor and themes of heroism, make it appealing to middle-schoolers, teenagers, and young adults alike.

The series follows Percy Jackson, a modern demigod son of Poseidon living in New York City, and the prophecy that shapes not only his life but the future of Mount Olympus.

The first out of five books, “The Lightning Thief,” was published in 2005. The final book, “The Last Olympian,” was published in 2009. Due to its popularity, it was followed by another five-part sequel series, “The Heroes of Olympus,” which ran from 2010 to 2014.

The first two books were adapted into films distributed by 20th Century Fox. “Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief” and “Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters” were released in 2010 and 2013. The films starred Logan Lerman as the titular character, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson and Jake Abel.

Despite the entertaining portrayal of the characters by the cast, both films received negative criticism from fans all over the world due to their inaccuracy and the decision to change major parts of the plot. It would explain why the third book, “The Titan’s Curse,” never got adapted into a movie.

“The script as a whole is terrible. I don’t simply mean that it deviates from the book, though certainly, it does that to point of being almost unrecognizable as the same story. Fans of the books will be angry and disappointed,” Rick Riordan, the author of the series, expressed in a letter to the producers back in 2009 on his blog. “They will leave the theater in droves and generate horrible word of mouth.”

However, this new adaptation promises a lot of exciting things for fans. Riordan stressed on social media as well that they will be casting an age-appropriate cast as opposed to the previous casting in the films. He will also be more involved in the process. All of which already make this adaptation a much more promising one.

With the pandemic limiting social gatherings, it is obvious that production will not commence anytime in the near future.

This exciting news has uplifted both old and new fans in the midst of these trying times, and the new adaptation will surely leave an impact similar to that of J.K Rowling’s “Harry Potter” series and franchise.

Here’s to Hollywood hopefully getting things right this time!
