Honu Coffee

April 12, 2016

I am going to reveal one of the best-kept secrets of all time. Only a very small portion of the student population is already aware of what I’m about to tell you. There is a place where loud customers and rude baristas are nonexistent. Your order is always m

ade with the utmost care and precision. You can go there and study for hours on end in a comfortable loft without other students around you fighting over a place to sit. Does this sound too good to be true? Well, I can promise you that it’s not. This “place” is better known as Honu Coffee, a small cafe on Lyons Avenue in Newhall. Let’s take a tour of it, shall we?

Even before you step in, you already feel at home with the Victorian exterior of the building. It’s almost as though you’re walking into a little college owned by a cute, cookie-baking grandma. Walking into Honu Coffee is like walking into one of those vintage cafes that only exist in the world of Pinterest. They totally nailed it with the checkered floors, giant chalkboard menu and garden chairs. The lighting is very creative and adds to the whole vintage ambiance. Instead of the typical ceiling lights, they hang a chain of light bulbs in a criss-cross from one wall to the other.

There’s always a cheerful employee to greet you and take your order. If you’re not sure about what to get on your first visit, I recommend the Surfin’ Honu — a perfect combination of peanut butter, chocolate and caffeine. (The sugar high that you get from it really helps with studying for AP tests, and I say this from personal experience.) Prices are a little high as everything that they offer is above average from the ingredients to the taste. Also, the slight increase in price is to be expected as Honu Coffee isn’t part of a chain like Starbucks. They care more about the quality of your drink and make sure it tastes just the way you want it rather than try to quickly sell mediocre coffee. The service is excellent, and it usually only takes the employees about five minutes for to prepare your drinks depending on the complexity of your order. If you’re one of those people that need to eat something along with your beverage, don’t worry because they have that covered too. There’s usually a fresh supply of baked goods that range from perfectly baked chocolate chip cookies to savory empanadas.

Now that you have your coffee and snack in hand, you’re ready to go upstairs for some peaceful studying or just a few minutes of alone time. If you walk down the hall and up the stairs, there is a lounge area complete with comfortable couches and tables. They also feature a unique bar seating area that overlooks all of the happy customers down below. There are plenty of outlets for everyone to keep their electronics charged, and they usually have some soothing cafe music playing in the background. And to top it all off, there’s free Wi-Fi! If that doesn’t convince you of how perfect this place is, I don’t know what will.

It’s rare to find such a cozy and friendly café like Honu Coffee in Santa Clarita. Many local coffee houses lack the homey atmosphere and high-quality beverages that Honu so effortlessly provides. It’s the perfect get away from the busy areas of town, and I guarantee that one visit will keep you going back over and over again.
