The West Ranch girls varsity volleyball team began their season this past Tuesday against Oak Park. Unfortunately, the Wildcats lost in the fifth set with a score of 15-12.

“It was our first game and I think we came out with a lot of energy,” said senior captain Sophie Bobal. “Obviously we didn’t win, but I think we did a lot as a team because we did have a lot of underclassmen this year. At the end of the day we grew a lot as a team, and I think we have a lot going for us going into season.”

The first set got off to a great start with strong serves and hits from junior Gwen Garate and senior captain Sophie Bobal, leading them to a 25-18 win. Junior captain Allison Jacobs performed consistently throughout the entire game, but her amazing save by kicking the ball over the net shocked the crowd. However, the Wildcats ended up losing the second set. The rest of the game was a closely fought battle with both teams battling it out in the last set. Although the Wildcats had the lead in the beginning, they were unable to stay ahead as Oak Park made a comeback. The scores for all five sets were 25-18, 22-25, 23-25, 25-22, and 12-15.

“I think that we had some bright spots,” said coach Jamey Ker. “I think that in general we played pretty good, but there was definitely some weaknesses in our blocking and our defense.”

Returning varsity player and captain Allison Jacobs has high hopes coming into this season and believes that this team has what it takes to make it very far in league this year.

“Our team is already more bonded than we were last year and it is actually making for a much more fun season,” said Allison Jacobs. “So, we want to keep that up and then we need to win league because that is just a must.”
