With summer almost here, new pop culture phenomena will appear—from the latest trends to popular dances, styles and songs.
A widely known term regarding pop culture and the music industry is the “Song of the Summer.” This phrase is the unofficial description of a massively successful track that is released during the summer. Previously, these songs have been some of the most recognizable and culturally dominant sounds of the year, making up many of the industry’s most popular audios. This widespread influence underscores the profound impact of music, extending beyond seasonal hits. “Music is an art form in which people communicate to us through melodies, beats, lyrics and various other techniques,” freshman Roohi Ranpura described.
“I think Sabrina Carpenter might surprise us again this summer or maybe Miley Cyrus with her new album” Ranpura predicted. Both pop artists are very popular and have many hit songs like Cyrus’ “Flowers” or Carpenter’s “Espresso,” making them possible candidates to release the next major hit this summer.
Additionally, senior Jude Rietta expressed his enjoyment of a “Song of the Summer.” “I love having songs that you can connect to through a frame of time, like summer,” Rietta explained. With the upcoming break, Wildcats can discover songs that connect their memories to lyrics. In terms of dominating musicians for this summer, “artists like Kendrick Lamar or The Weekend are safe bets,” Rietta commented. Both singers are known for their upbeat, yet in-depth music.
Another possible candidate is singer-songwriter Kali Uchis. Known for her mix of R&B, Pop, Indie and Latin, she recently released her album “Sincerely” in May. “I think ‘Lose My Cool’ will be the summer song,” Freshman Samantha Thai said. “It is a slow, sweet song that will get you into the summer vibe.” The song has an upbeat tempo, whilst the lyrics reference how love can affect emotional awareness. With Kali Uchis’ contemporary pop, “Lose My Cool” may be a contender for the best summer song.
On the other hand, junior Savanna Karidis expressed her hope for Billy Joel or Lana Del Rey to produce smash hits. “I like them because they have different styles than most singers, they’re very creative and have amazing voices,” Karidis explained. She elaborated about how Lana Del Rey would be her first choice to come out with a massive hit because of her sound. Karidis pointed out that to her, a lot of Del Rey’s discography gave off a summer sound, especially her album “Born to Die.”
Whether the anticipated song of the summer is from a popular artist or an up-and-coming star, it’s only a matter of time to find out which songs will create the soundtrack to 2025.
