Romantic comedies are lighthearted, fun watches that are perfect to watch with your gals or significant other. Here are a variety of different movies sure to make you laugh!
Valentine’s Day
What better to watch on Valentine’s day than “Valentine’s Day.” This movie features a series of interconnected stories, showing a glimpse of different characters’ highs and lows on this romantic day. While showing the relationship of newly engaged couples to breakups, there are a variety of different plots for each character, making the movie extremely intriguing and entertaining.
West Ranch Junior Isabella Garcia, who loves rom-coms, explained, “I really like the Valentine’s Day movie because it has such a good storyline. And on top of that, it has a lot of good actors and actresses that I love from other movies, so their acting really makes up the movie.”
All the actors give an amazing performance playing their different roles. With the amazing cast featuring Julia Roberts, Anne Hathaway, Bradley Cooper, Taylor Lautner and so many more talented actors, this movie is a must-watch.
Annie Hall
Looking for an older classic rom-com? “Annie Hall” is a great choice to watch this Valentine’s Day. The story follows a comedian, Alvy Singer, and the rise and fall of his relationship with his girlfriend, Annie Hall, a nightclub singer.
With an iconic duo featuring Woody Allen and Diane Keaton, this movie was considered one of the best rom-coms from the 70’s. It redefined romantic comedies from being unrealistic to portraying more distinguished and character-driven stories. The movie itself is happy and touching while still showing the struggles within the relationship of Alvy and Annie.
In fact, AP Language and Composition teacher, and big movie fan Mr. Blaugrund, remarked, “It really sort of reformatted the structure of romantic comedy. It’s incredibly funny and romantic, but also bittersweet and real.”
French Kiss
“French Kiss” is a romantic comedy, starring Meg Ryan and Kevin Kline, that was released in 1995. The story follows a woman named Kate, who wants to fly to France to win her fiancé back after he dumped her right before their wedding. However, going to France is not so easy for Kate as she is afraid of flying. She decides to take the flight anyway, and on the plane she meets a French thief named Luc. Luc pretends to be friendly but has his own secret plan.
Once Kate and Luc arrive in France, their journey becomes complicated. Kate tries to find her ex-fiancé to fix their relationship while Luc tries to recover a stolen necklace that he hid in Kate’s bag. Along the way, despite their very different personalities, Kate and Luc begin to develop feelings for each other.
This movie is a story about trying new things and being able to find joy in unexpected situations. AP Environmental Science teacher Laura Solarez expressed, “French Kiss takes place in Paris, and then you’ve got the French countryside, and then I like the writing in that one too, because it’s hilarious. The characters feel authentic because they’re not perfect, but then they come together and overcome it.”
13 Going on 30
One of the most iconic rom-coms from the 2000’s is “13 Going on 30.” After being humiliated on her 13th birthday, all Jenna Rink wants is to be 30, flirty and thriving! After using some wishing powder to make her wish come true, she wakes up as her 30-year-old self, with her dream job as a magazine editor.
While Jenna seems to have all that she would want in her 30-year-old adult life, she realizes something is missing. She is not friends with her childhood friend Matty anymore. Jenna realizes she does not like the person she’s become and wishes things could go back to the way they were.
Jenna works to rebuild her relationship with Matty throughout the story, learning many important lessons along the way. This movie seamlessly blends comedy, romance and life lessons to create an incredibly fun watch. Emily Adanalian, a junior at West Ranch, explained, “My favorite rom-com movie is ‘13 Going on 30,’ and the reason it’s one of my favorites is because I like how they’re like best friends, so they know everything about each other. And they just always have more fun together than with anyone else, I think it’s really cute.”
With a variety of great rom-coms to watch, this Valentine’s day season is sure to be filled with laughter, warmth, and joy!
