The stakes were high as the West Ranch Wildcats competed against the Saugus Centurions in a pivotal Foothill League lacrosse matchup on April 16 . With both teams tied for first place, the game had major playoff implications and was key in deciding the 2024-2025 league champion. Beyond the scoreboard, the evening also marked an emotional milestone for the Wildcats as they celebrated Senior Night, honoring the Class of 2025 in their final home game.
Earlier this season, West Ranch narrowly defeated Saugus 9–7 in a back-and-forth contest that came down to the final moments. That victory helped position the Wildcats as co-leaders in the Foothill League and set the tone for a heated rivalry.
In the rematch, the Centurions found their stride late in the second quarter, closing the half with a four-goal run that left West Ranch trailing 8–2 at halftime. Although the Wildcats regrouped and responded with five more goals in the second half, the early deficit proved too much to overcome. Saugus maintained control and closed the game with a 12–7 win, claiming sole possession of first place in the league standings.
Junior goalie Zain Dhar, a consistent leader for the Wildcats throughout the season, spoke about the challenges of handling pressure in such a high-stakes game. “I feel as though I could have played better,” Dhar reflected. “Today was a big game, and I think as a team we had a lot of nerves going into it. There are just some situations you can’t control.”
Dhar also opened up about the mental intensity of his role. “There’s a lot of pressure on me to perform well because if I’m having an off day, it directly affects the momentum of the team.” Still, he embraces the challenge: “But that’s also what I love about being a goalie—one save can shift the entire game. When I’m locked in and the other team can’t get anything by me, it kills their momentum.”
Offensively, junior Graden Choe chipped in with one goal and multiple key possessions. While the scoreboard didn’t reflect West Ranch’s usual firepower, Choe’s leadership and consistency stood out. “For games like this, I try to keep a clear head,” Choe emphasized. “Physically, I make sure I’m sharp by doing shooting reps and footwork drills. Mentally, I stay locked in by focusing on team goals and reminding myself to play with confidence, no matter the pressure.” Choe has been a standout offensive force for West Ranch this season, leading the team in total goals scored with thirty-seven and sixteen assists on the season.
Despite the loss, the night remained meaningful for the Wildcats. Family, friends and classmates packed the sidelines to celebrate the team’s seniors, many of whom have been with the program for years. Posters, flowers and cheers filled the air in a heartfelt sendoff that highlighted the players’ dedication and leadership. Head Coach Christopher Taylor reflected on what the senior class has meant to the program: “Great group of young men who’ve earned our respect and recognition as well.”
As the regular season nears its end, West Ranch will look to bounce back and prepare for a potential postseason run. Wildcats, make sure to support our lacrosse team in the upcoming games!
